I am starting this blog series so I can share what goes on behind the scenes in my life, as it is important to keep it real. I’m a wife, a Mom, and an entrepreneur, too, so I really do understand the trials and successes that go along with wearing each of those hats. One thing that I have found that helps me to successfully manage my life and keep on track is weekly goal setting.

Week Ending 14/09/19: You Win Some, You Lose Some

This is the first week of the school holiday. I love it when the kids are off school as I can be at my desk at 7am. I am a morning person, so this is a blessing; however, this meant leaving the house at 6:40am when the kids are still sleeping (hello, mum guilt!). The plan was to finish work by 2pm so I can be with the boys for the afternoon. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen every day, as I had hoped it would.  April is a crazy month with me having to prepare annual payrolls, quarterly VAT returns and some year end accounts/ corporation tax returns. Is your head dizzy yet? Mine sure is!

Goal Setting

Each week I set 3 goals that I must accomplish. For me, the purpose of goal setting is to help me gain clarity on what to prioritize each week, and then to build my calendar (and my life!) around those three goals. This week, my goal setting led me to these three goals:

  • Go to the gym at least three times.
  • Market myself.
  • Practice gratitude.

Working on My Fitness

Guess how many times I hit the gym last week?

Not even once. *sigh*

I had booked myself into some classes, including my favorite spin class…but I ended up cancelling every single time. I had been committed to my fitness regime but about six months ago I fell out of my rhythm and I have been struggling to get back into it ever since. Self sabotage is real! Ah well, when you fall don’t stay down. Instead pick yourself up and try again.

Showing Up

Learning to market consistently is something I didn’t always do in the past, but I know that needs to change. It is a bit like my fitness regime: I was consistent but then got out of the habit, and now I am trying to get back into it. I decided to break down my marketing efforts and pick one platform to dedicate myself to, to start. I am focusing my social media efforts on LinkedIn and I am pleased that I showed up 5 days in a row!! LinkedIn has been a struggle for me as it reminds me very much of the corporate world that I left behind. Having said that I have met some amazing people on this platform including clients who found me here.

Gratitude is in the Attitude

Lastly, I have been trying to practice gratitude daily. This was an important one to me when I was doing my goal setting because I am learning to be grateful for everything in my life (including challenges) and surrendering all to God. I can’t control everything, and that’s okay. In the past I have tried to control every little thing, but that isn’t a reasonable expectation to put on myself (nor is it realistic). In an effort to shift away from that mentality, I am trying to focus more on the positive and show gratitude for all of the wonderful things that I have in my life…including this business and all of you! I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for you, so I want to take this moment to thank you for supporting my entrepreneurial journey, my dreams, and, ultimately, my family.

One last note before I sign off of this goal setting reflection. Life is going to throw us all curve balls and challenges, but it is also going to throw us endless opportunities to show our resilience and strength. It is those moments that can really help change, challenge, and define us, not necessarily due to the challenge itself, but by providing us the opportunity to take that moment and turn it into a win. When we think about our win’s, we often think about the big, glaringly obvious ones, like, “I signed a new client!” or “I closed Q2 with a better bank balance than Q1!” I’ve come to realize that we need to pay attention to those small, everyday wins as well, and then stack them. Recognizing these seemingly small victories is another way of practicing gratitude, and it can have a powerful impact on our mindset.

So, what were your wins for last week?

Keep up with my “A Week in the Life Of” series and let me know how yours pan out in the comments!
